Otres Beach in Sihanoukville, Cambodia

Otres Beach in Sihanoukville, Cambodia

As soon as we arrived at Otres Beach in Sihanoukville, we were pretty happy. For one, we had an awesome view out of our beach bungalow.

Secondly, 50 cent beers are available in almost all the bars from 9am til midnight.

Otres Beach is a beautiful strip of sand, roughly 3km long, with a collection of guesthouses, bungalows, bars and restaurants at either end. There is a stretch of sand in between on which it is actually possible to be a mile from anyone else on the beach! The sea is beautifully clear, and early in the morning resembles a lake with almost no waves.
There are also some absolutely beautiful sunsets…

Otres Beach is roughly 7km from the town of Sihanoukville, meaning that there is more of a community feel around the bars, and among the ex-pats. We felt really welcome at Everythang (at the Western end of the beach). The whole crew were lovely, and we spent most of our happy hours there.

Unfortunately, Otres Beach is, hands down, the most expensive place we have been so far on our 4 months away. Eating anywhere along the beach (as expected) will require serious monetary consideration, and often requires the eater to chose the cheapest thing on the menu…even if we actually don’t want “Chips and Salsa” or “Onion Rings” for dinner.
Most places will also add a charge if you want butter or milk. As a British couple, we believe it is our basic human right to have toast with butter and tea with milk.

The accommodation is also pretty expensive. We paid $14 a night for a bungalow on the beach with a shared bathroom at Seagarden/ Jungle Beach. However, we got a discounted rate because we stayed for a week. It is possible to get a bungalow for $10, but these places were often insect/roach/rat infested and right next to the noisy bars, and therefore you’ll be kept up by an unusual concoction of Adele and Bob Marley!

We did find a restaurant in Otres Village that served food for less than $2. Otres Village is a 20 minute walk from the beach, walk out onto the main road, turn right, and then left (or ask around!).

There will be more on Otres Beach, mainly because we love it. But that’s it for now.

As I type this it is 8:45 am 14th may. I am sat at my desk as I have been since 7am. its sunny but cold and I am grumpy. These pictures haven’t made me rage at all, and I am not in the slightest way angry or jealous. Now if you don’t mind I am off to yell at some undeserving person.

Hey, I’m travelling through Vietnam next month and looking into going to Sihanoukville afterwards but heard really mixed reviews! How long would you stay in the area, and also are there many young British travellers there for the nightlife?!

Hi James, we stayed on Otres Beach for 6 days or so. We really enjoyed ourselves there. In terms of nightlife, there are loads of bars on the beach. Also, you could head into Sihanoukville itself for a night as I believe there’s more of a late-night party scene at Serendipity Beach.
Also, there were quite a few Brits there as well.
Hope this helps – let us know if you have any more questions! And hope you enjoy your travels.

    Hi Oli,
I’m staying on otres beach right now and you got it right, it’s so expensive… Can you tell me where you got food for 2$? That would be great!

We found the cheaper food round the corner from the main mushroom point hostel (North Otres)….if you ask anyone, they should be able to point you in the direction of either the market/live music or the grocery store in town which has a few plastic chairs and sells the amazing $2 plates of fried rice. It was about a 20 min walk 🙂
