A Guide to Penang, Malaysia
Travelling through Malaysia wasn't really a huge plan, we just winged it after Koh Tao and seemed to end up there. We hopped on the (insanely clean) train from Chumphon, which goes straight to Butterfield. Once you've arrived, you can get a very cheap & efficient ferry over to the beautiful Unesco World Heritage site of Georgetown -- the capital of Penang in Malaysia. We stayed in a super cute colonial little guesthouse near to Little India and explored from there, which was super duper easy as everything is pretty close. We had been travelling full time for almost 6 months at this point and were definitely on the low end of our energy scale....despite the fact we had just chilled for two weeks on Koh Tao. Hence why this post has been sat on my to do list since July......whoops
Malaysia isn't a country that we have heard rave reviews about, and in truth, we would never return to Kuala Lumpur but we really enjoyed Georgetown, and I personally loved Melaka too. One of my favourite things about Georgetown, was all of the incredible street art. Who knew? I guess I should have read my Lonely Planet eh....
And nearby, we often went to the delicious street market for a juice or two...
Lastly, but without question NOT leastly....in fact, it was the best thing in Georgetown -- The Blue Mansion, aka the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. The incredible and tragic story behing the millionare businessman's entirely blue mansion is extraoadinary and our guide brought the whole thing to life. If you only do one thing in Malaysia, do this.
What do you think? Have you been to Malaysia? Are you tempted to go?
