Isn’t it a truth universally acknowledged that you will never appreciate everything the city you live in has to offer?  I’m yet to meet anyone who lives in London who actually manages to explore hidden gems, cool new spots and, of course, hit all of the top sights too.

Even I, with the flexibility of working from home don’t take an afternoon to walk through a neighbourhood I’ve never visited, or check out an Instagrammable mews street. Which is why I jumped at the chance to go on Intrepid Travel’s Luxe London Tour when they asked me.  Run by their sister company Urban Adventures, it’s a quirky tour around a few of the sights in central London with one yummy thread running through it — chocolate.

Box of colourful Laduree Macaron

We started with a decadent pastry breakfast outside Eros which I devoured while listening to our guide talk us through the history of Soho — taking us back to a time when the whole area was hay bales and farmers. The Great Fire of London was thrown in for good measure too. It’s fairly shameful, but a lot of the history our Australian guide ran through was news to me…..and I have lived here for 15 years!

More than simply a walking tour around London where you stop for pictures and annoy native Londoners navigating their way from A to B,  Urban Adventures managed to weave the perfect amount of storytelling into the walking, and just as you start to get a little weary from the exercise — hit you with a delicious, sugar hit. We wound our way from Piccadilly through Regent Street, Fortnum and Mason to Ladurée and Liberty with a yummy Godiva stop to sample the original Praline before melting into heart shaped chairs in Choccywoccydoodah’s ‘secret room’ above their Carnaby Street store. They put on the most decadent spread of moist cakes, tray baked bars and, of course, endless tea.

It was a wonder I managed to get out of my seat afterwards, but I peeled myself away and back out into the London rain to trudge to the tube. A little heavier, with a whole lot of excitement about my beautiful city.

What would be your perfect city tour?
